BBC: Australia town bans bottled water
July 9th, 2009 3:02 PM

A rural town in Australia has voted overwhelmingly to ban the sale of bottled water over concerns about its environmental impact.

Bottled water (file pic)

City of New York has been moving aggressively to promote using tap water for drinking, and stop using bottle water. Bottle water, in their understanding, creates immense amounts of plastic bottles, which mainly end up in landfill. Cities take some effort to provide clean potable water and use substantial resources. It makes sense to use that water, if it is provided at high quality, instead of bypassing it.

One aspect cities need to take into account is an increase in water consumption. Bottled water is often sourced from outside immediate surrounding of any city, thus providing access to other water reservoirs. An increase in water usage may mean shortages and faster depletion of any water source cities have. It would make sense to look at other options to minimize water usage, or rather water waste. This way overall balance of water usage can remain the same. Examples: rainwater harvesting; low flow fixtures; better flow controls; tankless heaters, etc.

55% said “they buy books for decoration.."

Recent Statistics Related to Book Publishing and Marketing
by John Kremer

http://www.bookmarket.com/statistics6.htm

In a survey of 4,000 adults in the United Kingdom, 55% said “they buy books for decoration, and have no intention of actually reading them.” (Teletext) This is another important reason why your books should be well-designed. They should look good on a buyer's coffee table, bookshelf, bedside stand, etc.

And I am sure people do not cover the difference by reading online - they just don't read. We are turning "Fahrenheit 451" into a prophecy.
